Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Checacupe – Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain – Stone Forest – Cusco

Highlight of the Day: Discover the three Rainbow Mountains of Palcoyo, explore the remarkable Stone Forest, and admire breathtaking views of Ausangate Mountain and the Vilcanota Range.

Your journey begins before sunrise with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. As we travel through the South Valley, the landscapes gradually transform from traditional villages and cultivated fields into the dramatic scenery of the high Andes. Along the route, we pass through the historic town of Checacupe, home to its famous Inca, Colonial, and Republican bridges.

Continuing deeper into the Vilcanota Mountain Range, we arrive at the starting point of our hike. The trail follows a gentle route through open highland scenery, making Palcoyo one of the most accessible mountain experiences near Cusco. As the path gradually ascends, colorful ridges begin to emerge across the horizon, creating a landscape unlike any other in the Andes.

Soon, the full beauty of the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains comes into view. Unlike destinations that feature a single colorful peak, Palcoyo presents a series of vibrant mountains spread across the landscape, creating extraordinary panoramic views. From the main viewpoint, you can admire the striking colors of the mountains, the surrounding valleys, and the imposing presence of Ausangate Mountain, the highest peak in the Cusco region.

The adventure continues to the Stone Forest, one of Palcoyo’s most fascinating natural attractions. These towering rock formations rise above the mountain landscape and offer exceptional viewpoints across the Vilcanota Range. From here, the scenery stretches in every direction, revealing colorful mountains, remote valleys, and snow-capped peaks that define this spectacular region of Peru.

After exploring the area, we travel to Cusipata for lunch before beginning our return journey through the Andes. In the afternoon, we arrive back in Cusco and transfer you to your hotel.

Due to the high altitude of Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain, some travelers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness, including headaches, fatigue, or shortness of breath. We recommend spending at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco before the trek, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption before the tour.

Weather Conditions

Weather in the Andes can change quickly. Mornings are usually cold, while daytime temperatures may become warmer under direct sunlight. We recommend dressing in layers and bringing rain protection, especially during the rainy season.
