Salkantay Trek 4 Days 3 Nights Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake.
The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 4 Days 3 Nights begins with hotel pickup in Cusco at 05:00 am. We drive 3.5 hours via Anta and Mollepata to Challacancha, the trailhead. Along the route, you will have clear views of Salkantay and Humantay mountains, two of the most important peaks in the Cusco region.
A short stop is made in Mollepata for optional breakfast, restrooms, and last purchases before continuing to Challacancha, where the trekking team prepares equipment and pack animals. The Salkantay trek 4 days itinerary starts with a gradual hike toward Soraypampa (3,800 m), following a defined trail across valley sections and irrigation channels still used by local communities.
The first section covers 7 km in about 3 hours to Soraypampa basecamp. We serve lunch at camp. In the afternoon, the route continues with an uphill hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m), one of the key points of the Humantay Lake trek, with direct views of the glacier and surrounding mountain landscape.

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Huayracmachay – Chaullay.
This day is the most demanding section of the Salkantay trek Peru. It reaches the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m). The day starts early with a steady ascent over 7 km, following a defined mountain trail with increasing altitude and reduced oxygen levels.
During the ascent, the route crosses rocky terrain and high-altitude valleys with direct views of Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo mountains. This section of the Salkantay trek 4 days itinerary requires consistent pacing due to the altitude gain and steep sections.
After reaching the pass, the trail descends 5 km toward Huayracmachay, where lunch is served. The descent follows a narrow path with gravel sections and mountain slopes.
In the afternoon, the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu 4 days continues into the cloud forest, with a 10 km hike through changing vegetation, warmer temperatures, and increased humidity. Arrival at Chaullay (2,900 m) for dinner and overnight camping.

Day 03: Chaullay – La Playa – Santa Teresa – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
The Salkantay trek continues through the Santa Teresa valley. The route descends into lower altitude zones with warmer conditions. This section includes tropical vegetation, waterfalls, and agricultural areas with coffee, banana, and avocado plantations.
The trail passes through Colpapampa and continues to La Playa. We serve lunch here. This part of the Salkantay trek Peru has a more stable temperature and less altitude exposure than previous days.
After lunch, we transfer by local transport to Hidroelectrica. From here, you can walk about 3 hours along the railway or take the train to Aguas Calientes (not included). This section follows a flat route along the river and train tracks.
We arrive in Aguas Calientes in the afternoon. We stay in a hotel and have dinner before the Machu Picchu visit.
This stage of the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu 4 days is less demanding in altitude. It still requires consistent walking distance and connects directly with the final access to Machu Picchu.
