Itinerary – Lares Trek 3 Days 2 Nights

Day 1: Cusco – Calca – Lares – Wacawasi

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 5:30 am and travel by private vehicle through the Sacred Valley toward the town of Calca. Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful views of traditional Andean villages, agricultural terraces, and surrounding mountains. In Calca, you will have time to enjoy breakfast at the local market, use the facilities, and experience the daily life of the region.

We then continue driving toward the Amparaes Pass (4,580 m / 15,026 ft), the highest point of the day, where you will enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, remote highland communities, and herds of llamas and alpacas grazing across the landscape. After taking in the scenery, we descend toward the Lares Valley, meet our muleteers, and begin the trekking portion of the Lares Trek 3 Days 2 Nights.

The lares hike starts with a gradual uphill walk of approximately 1.5 hours to reach our lunch spot at Chanca Chaca. After lunch, we continue along a gentle ascending trail, passing small villages and interacting with local families along the way, before arriving at Wacawasi (3,800 m / 12,377 ft), our first campsite.

In the afternoon, you will have time to relax, enjoy afternoon tea, and connect with the surrounding environment before dinner.

Day 2: Wacawasi – Ipsaycocha Pass – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

After an early breakfast, we begin one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the Lares Trek 3 Days 2 Nights. The day starts with a steady 3-hour ascent toward the Ipsaycocha Pass (4,500 m), the highest point of the trek. As you climb, the landscape opens up to reveal wide mountain views, glacial peaks, and expansive highland terrain.

At the summit, you will have time to rest and take in the impressive scenery before beginning the descent. We then hike downhill for about 1 hour to reach the area near Ipsaycocha Lake, a peaceful spot surrounded by Andean wildlife. Here, we stop for lunch while enjoying the natural surroundings.

After lunch, we continue descending through open valleys and rural landscapes toward the community of Patacancha, where our transportation will be waiting.

From here, we travel by vehicle to Ollantaytambo, an important Inca town in the Sacred Valley. In the evening, you will board the train to Aguas Calientes. This scenic train journey offers a unique transition from high Andean terrain to lush cloud forest, following the Urubamba River along the way.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will check into your hotel and have time to relax before dinner. An early night is recommended in preparation for your visit to Machu Picchu the next day.

After breakfast, you will take one of the first buses up to the entrance, allowing you to arrive early and experience the site in the quiet morning atmosphere.

As you enter Machu Picchu, you will witness the first light illuminating the ancient citadel, creating a truly memorable setting surrounded by mountains and cloud forest. Your guide will lead a comprehensive 2–3 hour tour, visiting the most important sectors of the site, including the Sun Temple, Main Plaza and Temple of the Three Windows.

During the tour, you will learn about the history, architecture, and significance of Machu Picchu, gaining a deeper understanding of the Inca civilization and its connection to the surrounding landscape.

After the guided visit, you will have free time to explore the site at your own pace, take photos, or hike additional areas such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (if previously booked).

Pre-Trek Briefing

All briefings are held at your hotel in Cusco around 5:00 PM, one or two days before your tour. The session lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

During the briefing, your guide will explain the itinerary in detail, provide your duffel bag, and answer any questions to ensure you are fully prepared.

Acclimatization in Cusco

Proper acclimatization is essential before starting your trek. Cusco is located at 3,400 m (11,150 ft) above sea level.

We recommend arriving at least 2 to 3 days in advance to help your body adjust and avoid altitude sickness.

Return from Machu Picchu

After your visit, you will take the bus to Aguas Calientes (approximately 25 minutes).

You will then take the train to Ollantaytambo, followed by transportation back to Cusco.
